Softball Topped Twice at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball was swept in a doubleheader at Fresno State Tuesday by scores of 9-0 in 5 innings and 17-3 in 5 innings.

GAME 1
The Bulldogs (22-7) got the scoring going almost immediately with a two-run home run to the second batter in the bottom of the first, Hayleigh Galvan. The offense didn't slow down and scored at least a run in each of the next three frames, highlighted by four in the third.

Keahilele Mattson added a home run as well and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Kaitlyn Jennings was 2-for-3 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot and Alesia Denby scored a pair of runs with a triple and an RBI.

Lauren Anderson (1-2) started for the Broncos (3-10) and allowed six runs on six hits with three walks while taking the loss.

Danielle Lung (2-2) tossed the 5-inning complete game, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Emma Bickford and Sarah Ellersick had the two Santa Clara this with Ashley Trierweiler reaching via a walk.

GAME 2
After Santa Clara got off to a good start with two runs in the first, the Fresno State offense came back with a huge bottom of the frame. The first eight batters reached in the inning as the Bulldogs scored eight times.

The Broncos got another run in the third but again Fresno State answered with five in the bottom.

Miranda Rohleder and Adrianna Noriega were the offensive stars of the game. Rohleder was 4-for-4 with two triples, four RBIs, and two runs scored, and Noriega was 2-for-3 with a double, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Mattson was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI as well.

Dariana Orme (6-2) went 4-plus innings to get the win. She allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Allyson Ferreira and Trierweiler both collected two hits and had a stolen base for Santa Clara with Ferreira scoring two runs and talking a walk and Trierweiler scoring one. Lauren LaHood and Ellersick both picked up RBIs.

Zoe Straughn (1-1) started for Santa Clara but didn't record an out until she reentered and pitched the fourth. Overall, she allowed 11 runs, eight earned, on four hits with seven walks and took the loss.

The Broncos begin WCC play at home Saturday at noon with a doubleheader vs. LMU.
