Softball Drops Series-Opener at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's scored five runs in the second inning, more than enough for starter Sofia Earle, and beat Santa Clara softball 10-0 in five innings Friday to start a three-game series.

The Gaels (10-19, 1-3 WCC) bats erupted in the second, collecting seven hits while getting five across. After one in the third, a four-spot in the fourth, capped by Julia McCormack's two-run homer, put the game away.

McCormack picked up a pair of this and scored two runs to go with her homer. Indya Smith also had two hits with a run scored and an RBI and Marissa Nishihara was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, two runs scored, and two RBIs out of the leadoff spot.

Earle (5-9) was nearly untouchable in the circle, allowing just one hit while going the distance. She struck out six and walked just one.

The lone Broncos (5-15, 2-5 WCC) hit was a leadoff single in the second by Emma Bickford.

Lauren Anderson (1-6) started and took the loss in 1 1/3 innings. She allowed five runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
