Softball Wins in Extras to Split WIth San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split a doubleheader at San Diego Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos (7-17, 4-7 WCC) took the first game 4-2 in 8 innings but dropped game two to the Toreros (11-27, 2-9 WCC) 3-2.

GAME 1
A two-run home run from an unlikely source in extra innings was the difference as the Broncos won game one.

With two outs, Allyson Ferreira hit the first home run and just the seventh extra base hit of her Santa Clara career over the right field wall. She finished the game with three RBIs and two hits to lead the offense.

Ashley Trierweiler also knocked in a run with a single in the in the third and Emma Bickford added a pair of hits as well.

Liyah Lopez (3-3) was solid in the circle. She picked up the win in 7 innings while allowing two runs on eight hits with a strikeout. Lauren Anderson pitched a perfect eighth to pick up her first save.

Down 2-0 since the third, the Toreros evened the score at 2-all in the sixth. Sof Delgado knocked in the first run with a single and a sac fly from Halle Kyler brought home the second.

Delgado finished with two hits and Sophi Bjerk was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Ma Earnshaw (3-13) suffered the complete game loss. She allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

GAME 2
A Santa Clara comeback came up short after the Broncos fell behind 3-0 in the second game of the day.

Trierweiler and Ferreira led off the sixth with back-to-back singles and after a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Ellersick, Emma Bickford knocked in a run with a sac fly. Kenzie Yamakoshi followed with an RBI double but San Diego starter Braegelmann stopped it there and shutdown the Broncos in the seventh.

Trierweiler led the Santa Clara offense with a pair of hits and two stolen bases. Three others picked up a hit each.

Braegelmann (6-1) allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in the complete game win.

San Diego scored first in the second without a hit on two walks and an error before adding two more in the fifth on an RBI single and a bases loaded walks.

No Torero had more than one hit with Amand Limon and Bjerk picking up RBIS.

Zoe Straughn (2-2) lasted 4 2/3 innings and took the loss. She allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits with six walks and a strikeout.
