SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Regan Dias tossed a gem and the Santa Clara softball offense added some late insurance runs to pick up a 4-0 win over Stanford in the home opener Tuesday evening.
Dias (1-1) was on from the first pitch. The Broncos (1-1) junior allowed just two hits and a walk while punching out four against a Cardinal (4-1) offense that was scoring 7.5 runs per game and hitting .387 with a .456 on-base percentage.
Not to be overshadowed, the offense gave Dias a 1-0 lead in the first and added on in the sixth with a three spot.
The rally in the sixth was started for free when Emily Eudy was hit by a pitch and Kenzie Yamakoshi reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. The next batter, Sarah Ellersick, made it hurt with an RBI double. Santa Clara added a run on a fielder's choice and another hit batter later in the frame.
In the first, a leadoff walk by Ashley Trierweiler and a bunt single by Allyson Ferreira to lead off the first set up the Broncos. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Lauren LaHood came through with an RBI single to left.
Six different Broncos picked up a hit each with Ellersick, Eudy, LaHood, and Emma Bickford all driving in a run. Trierweiler got on twice at the top of the order via walks and added a sacrifice bunt.
Even the defense came up big for Santa Clara. After a leadoff double by Sydney Steele in the third, Teagan Cowles smoked a liner that Eudy snagged on a line and threw to second to turn into a double play.
Stanford starter Regan Krause (1-1) settled down and matched Dias after the first until the fifth when Maddy Dwyer came in to escape a jam. Krause went 4 1/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Steele and Emily Schultz had the two Cardinal hits.
