Softball Splits With Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split a doubleheader at Sacramento State Friday afternoon.

The Broncos (2-3) topped the Hornets (5-10) 7-2 in the first game but fell 3-0 in the day's finale.

GAME 1
A close game for six innings turned into a bit of a blowout as Santa Clara scored three times in the seventh. The big blow was a two-run double by Emma Bickford that was followed later by a two out RBI single from Maddie Taylor.

Bickford finished the game with three RBIs and a run scored with Cameron McGinnis going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Ashley Trierweiler added a pair of hits and scored two runs as well.

The Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second, but Sacramento State answered with one in the bottom of the second.

Santa Clara again got the lead to two in the fourth after McGinnis' RBI single, but the Hornets responded in the fifth with another run to make it 3-2.

Liyah Lopez started and went 3 2/3 innings. She pitched around traffic but allowed just one run while surrendering six hits and two walks with a strikeout. Lauren Anderson (1-0) picked up the win in 1 inning of relief and Regan Dias got her first save, tossing the final 2 1/3 innings.

Alondra Mejia led the Sacramento State offense with three hits, including a double. Alexis Parish was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Samantha Parish added a pair of hits as well.

Carley Morfey (0-4) started and took the loss in two innings. She allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

GAME 2
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel with Sacramento State scoring the only runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Amber Rodriguez knocked in two runs with a double and two batters later Mejia tripled her home.

Lewa Day also added two hits for the Hornets.

Marissa Bertuccio (4-5) kept the Santa Clara bats in check, tossing a two-hit shutout with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Regan Dias (1-3) was solid in the circle as well but took the loss. She allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk.

Bickford had a double and Trierweiler a single to account for the Bronco offense.
