Softball Drops Two Against BYU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball was swept in a doubleheader by BYU at home Friday to open the final weekend of the season.

The Cougars (32-15, 10-1 WCC) topped the Broncos (8-19, 5-9 WCC) by finals of 9-0 in 6 innings and 15-2 in 5 innings.

GAME 1
BYU starter Autumn Moffat-Korth was nearly untouchable in the circle and the Cougars offense came alive in the later innings, highlighted by a five-run sixth that featured back-to-back home runs.

Moffat-Korth (18-8) went the distance, allowing just one hit with two walks while striking out eight.

The top three hitters in BYU's lineup went a combined 6-for-10 with three home runs, six RBIs, and five runs scored to pace the offense.

HannahJo Peterson finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, a walk, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Violet Zavodnik added a pair of hits, including a home run, and two RBIs with Rylee Jensen going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Santa Clara starter Lauren Anderson (2-7) lasted 5 2/3 innings while taking the loss. She allowed nine runs, but just four earned, on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Ashley Trierweiler had the only Broncos hit with Emma Bickford and Lauren LaHood also getting on via a walk and Sarah Ellersick being hit by a pitch.

GAME 2
The Cougars put the game away almost immediately, scoring nine runs in the first while sending 13 batters to the plate with the first six reaching safely.

Hill-Barring finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and four RBIs. Zavodnik added a pair of hits and three RBIs with Jensen scoring three runs on two hits and a walk.

The Broncos got the offense going without a hit in the third thanks to a catcher's interference and two walks. Allyson Ferreira and Ellersick followed with back-to-back singles to knock in runs.

That was all BYU starter Arissa Paulson (10-4) would allow as she went the distance to pick up the win. She allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Zoe Straughn (2-3) got just one out in her start but re-entered in the fifth. In all, she allowed nine runs on seven hits and four walks while taking the loss in 1 1/3 innings.
