SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf scored a second round 3-over 291, ending the first day of competition at the Lamkin San Diego Classic in 12th place with a two-round total of 12-over 588.

The day could have gone better if not for a late stumble over the initial 18 holes. "We had a tough finish to the first round," head coach Rob Miller said. "But we gathered the troops and put together a good second round."

Competing in an event with seven teams ranked in the top-50 of the recent Golfstat.com poll and an additional five teams in the top-100, the Broncos are once again holding their own.

"Being in the middle of the pack in this field is what we are hoping for," Miller added "A better third round could put us in a good spot."

Texas, the highest ranked team in the event, leads the field by four shots. The Broncos are three strokes behind No. 73 Arizona and eight behind No. 59 UCLA. "We don't have to beat them (higher ranked teams), being close helps us in the rankings too," Miller said.

Hayden Shieh overcame a triple-bogey on the fourth hole and shot a 2-over 74 in the first round. His 1-under 71 over the second 18 holes moved him into a tie for 27th at 1-over 145.

Matt McCarty carded a second-round even-par 72 and to claim a share of 41st place at 3-over 147. Derek Ackerman and Charlie Watson are tied for 46th at 4-over 148. With rounds of 76 and 77, Hassan Said is tied for 73rd at 9-over 153.

At 5-under, Thomas Rosenmueller of North Texas will take a one-shot lead over four golfers into Tuesday's final round.

"There won't be low scores," Miller added. "The greens are tough and fast, which prevents players from being too aggressive. And that's a great equalizer."

Players will tee off from holes No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 8 a.m. PT on Tuesday. Live scoring is available at Golfstatresults.com.
