Aggie Invitational Draws/Results
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After a couple weeks of practice, the Santa Clara men's tennis opens the 2017-18 season Friday with an appearance in the Aggie Invitational, which will be held at UC Davis.
The three-day tournament features players from Nevada, Saint Mary's, Sacramento State, Pacific, San Francisco, Stanford, Cal, Gonzaga, Portland and the host Aggies.
Santa Clara's eight-man roster will see action in both singles and doubles in the non-team scored event.
"We've been focusing a lot on the physical side and the mental side so it's good to get a first test to compete," second-year head coach Niall Angus said. "A lot of our guys have come back in really good shape. Now it is our first chance to test ourselves against some of these schools that started a little earlier than us. But this is a good initial barometer to see where we're at and then we'll be tested again at the end of the fall."
Last season, junior Andrew Gu led the team in singles wins with 18, including a 13-4 mark in dual matches. Junior Robert Seby played atop the lineup, posting a 9-8 record in dual singles match. Connor Garnett, another junior, was 17-7 overall in singles. Garnett and Seby teamed quite often in doubles, posting an 8-4 record, including 5-2 as the top position in dual matches.
Despite limited practice time leading up to the team's first tournament, the Broncos are an experienced crew with each player having seen action with the program.
"They know what college tennis is about now," Angus said. "They're coming in understanding what is required on the court. They've seen a lot of the guys before and understand what the competition is like, and they're going to understand that if they go in with the right mindset and right attitude. They are just as good as anybody out there. So they have a good chance to test themselves and see how they measure up right now."
The tournament features three singles draws and two in doubles.
