Women's Basketball Wins Final Exhibition Over San Francisco State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball won its second and final exhibition 74-39 over San Francisco State in the Leavey Center on Monday night.

The Broncos used a big second half to pull away from the Gators behind a strong defensive effort. Santa Clara forced 22 turnovers and held a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

After a jumper by Laura Lawson at the 2:08 mark in the second quarter made it 25-19, Santa Clara went on a 10-0 run that went into the second half and saw the Broncos take control. They outscored the Gators 21-10 in the third quarter and 23-10 in the fourth.

As a team, the Broncos shot 50.0 percent from the floor and 52.6 percent from beyond the arc with four scorers landing in double-figures. Emily Wolph led all scorers with 19 points and added four assists and four rebounds. Morgan McGwire scored 16 on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and added four boards and three assists.

Dru Toleafoa started and scored 11 while knocking down three 3-pointers to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Tamia Braggs also cracked double-digits with 10 and four rebounds.

Rachel Iozzia led San Francisco State with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from downtown but went scoreless in the second half. Jhaina Stephens scored 10 while Imani Smith dished out five assists for the Gators.

San Francisco State kept things interesting in the first quarter by answering a game-opening 6-0 run by Santa Clara with eight in a row of their own. The Broncos responded with eight in a row of their own to take a 14-8 lead and never looked back.

NOTES

Santa Clara is now 11-7 all-time against San Francisco State.
The Broncos had 19 assists on 27 made baskets.
Santa Clara picked up 13 steals as a team.
The Broncos outrebounded the Gators 36-27.
All nine Broncos that saw action played at least 15 minutes.

"San Francisco State came in and played hard. They executed and made some shots early. We talked in the locker room about how good teams make a run at you and you have to keep doing what you do. Eventually we pulled away. One thing that helped was I thought our conditioning tonight was better. Our players were able to play more minutes and provide more quality."
