Five Women's Soccer Alums in NWSL Playoffs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer will be well represented in the upcoming National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) playoffs with five alums on the four playoff teams. Sofia Huerta and Julie Johnston will represent the Chicago Red Stars, Katherine Reynolds and Meleana Shim will play for the Portland Thorns, and Alyssa Kleiner is with the Washington Spirit.

The West Coast Conference has eight former players on the playoff teams, with the Portland Pilots the only other WCC team registering more than one.

The five Broncos have a combined 12 All-WCC selections, nine All-West Region selections, five All-American nods, two WCC Player of the Year awards (Johnston in 2013, Huerta in 2014), and a WCC Freshman of the Year (Johnston in 2010).

Washington finished with the best record in team history in part because of Kleiner. She appeared in 17 games and made 12 starts as one of just seven players to see over 1,100 minutes this season.

Reynolds and Shim of the Thorns are hoping to become the first No. 1 seeded team to win the NWSL Playoffs.

Huerta started all 20 games and finished second on the Red Stars with seven goals and two assists for 16 points. Johnston started all 12 games that she played for the club after missing a portion of the season while competing with the United States Women's National Team at the Olympic Games in Brazil.

The single elimination tournament begins Friday with the Spirit and Red Stars playing at 5 p.m. The second game features the Thorns and Flash at begins Sunday at 2 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. All three games will air live on Fox Sports 1.
