Women's Soccer Can't Overcome Second Half Goal in 1-0 Loss at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Coming off a grueling overtime contest two days ago, Santa Clara women's soccer fell 1-0 at San Diego on Saturday night. After battling for 110 minutes with No. 3 BYU on Thursday, the Broncos couldn't mount a comeback after falling behind midway through the second half.

The Broncos (3-5-4, 0-1-1) held the edge in the attacking third, outshooting San Diego (7-4-1, 2-0) 12-8 and 8-6 in shots on goal but Amber Michel made some incredible saves to keep Santa Clara from finding the back of the net. Michel finished the game with eight saves.

Brittany Ambrose, Katie Pingel, and Maddie Gonzalez all put two shots on goal each and Jenna Roering and Machaela George added one apiece.

Melissa Lower had another strong game as well, picking up five saves. Her best effort came in the near the end of the first half when she stuck out her foot on a shot by Tara Meier and knocked the ball away to keep the match scoreless.

The lone goal came in the 66th minute for the Toreros off a bad clear by the Bronco defense. A Santa Clara defender tried to pass across the top of the box but Summer Mason intercepted her pass. She took a few touches and slid her shot just inside the near post.

The Broncos pushed forward to try and score the equalizer but they couldn't find the back of the net. They had two shots got just wide of the frame in the final 20 minutes and Amber made a nice stop on Gonzalez in the 79th minute.

Santa Clara returns home to face Pacific on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Fans can purchase a special event ticket to receive a Santa Clara soccer scarf.
