Women's Soccer Ties UCLA 2-2 in First Spring Game

Spring Schedule

LOS ANGELES – In the first spring game of the year, Santa Clara women's soccer battled to a 2-all tie with UCLA Sunday afternoon in Southern California.

The Broncos got goals from Maddie Gonzalez and newcomer Maria Sanchez in the 20th and 60th minutes. The Bruins scored their goals in the 59th and 90th minutes.

Both Sanchez, a transfer, and Kelsey Turnbow, an early enrollee, saw their first action in a Santa Clara uniform.

"I was happy with the team's performance today," Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith said. "The addition of Maria Sanchez and Kelsey Turnbow were big for us but it was a very, very good team effort. When you play a great team like UCLA right off the bat, everyone works just a little bit harder to get ready. We were very excited to play a quality opponent"

UCLA, who finished the 2016 season No. 8 in the RPI and No. 13 in the Coaches Poll, played with US Soccer player Mallory Pugh and Canadian Soccer player Jessie Fleming, giving the Broncos some strong competition in their first action since the national quarterfinals.

Santa Clara plays again April 9 at 3:30 p.m. against UC Davis at Stevens Stadium.
