SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team completed the second day of the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Saturday. Bronco senior Katie Le, who is seeded No. 4 in the tournament, takes on No. 2 seed Anett Schutting in the semifinals Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
In singles on Saturday, Le defeated the No. 6 seed Klara Fabikova of Cal in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to Sunday's semifinals. In the Blue draw consolation quarterfinals, Chelby Cooke fell to Sabi Leon-Chao of San Jose State by a score of 6-4, 6-4. In the Gold singles consolation quarterfinals, freshman Danielle Silva defeated Anneka Watts of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-3. Sunday Silva takes on Christiana Ferrari of Pacific at 10:00 a.m. in the semifinals.
Two Broncos, Stephanie Skaras and Nikki Wolny, participated in the round robin event on Saturday. Wolny defeated Sacramento's Emily McColl, 6-3, 6-1, while Skaras fell to Jennifer Nguyen of Sacramento by a score of 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, partners Le and Silva upset the No. 4 seed Brynn Boren and Gabi DeSimone of USC in a tight match that ended in the Broncos favor, 8-7(3). They advanced to the semifinals where they fell to the No. 2 seed Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi of the host school Cal, 8-3.
In the Gold doubles consolation quarterfinals, duo Cooke and Skaras defeated Chrstiana Ferrari and Francis Dean of Pacific, 8-2. In the semifinals, the Broncos took on Morgan Anderson and Savannah Ware of BYU and topped them by a score of 8-4, advancing them to the finals. Cooke and Skaras found themselves up against Nicolette Tran and Toby Miclat from BYU, but BYU does not compete on Sundays; therefore, the Bronco duo won the Gold doubles consolation finals by default.
If Le defeats Schutting in the semifinals, the championship match will start at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
