SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 4 seeded Santa Clara women's tennis team swept No. 9 Portland 4-0 in the first round of the 2014 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships on Wednesday to advance to the next round on Thursday.

The Broncos move on to the quarterfinal round against No. 5 San Diego on Thursday, April 24 at 12:30 p.m. at the Barnes Tennis Center.  USD defeated LMU 4-1 on Wednesday. The Broncos will be looking to avenge an early-season loss to San Diego as they won 4-3 this season in San Diego.  Click here to read the game recap from the March 25, 2014 match.

Santa Clara tallies an 11-9 overall dual record after its 4-0 WCC win over the Portland Pilots. The Broncos are 5-2 at home, 3-6 on the road and 3-1 on neutral surfaces. The team went 5-4 in the WCC this spring with regular season wins over San Francisco, Loyola Marymount, Portland and Gonzaga.

The Broncos were able to get on the board first by winning the doubles point. On court three, the Santa Clara duo of Daniella Silva and Nicolette Wolny trumped Emily Gould and Saroop Dhatt of Portland, 8-2. The No. 1 team of Chelby Cooke and Katie Le clinched the doubles point for the Broncos with an 8-4 victory over the Pilot's Sophie van den Aarssen and Jelena Lazarevic. The match on court two was then halted.

Turning to the singles competition, the Broncos nabbed the necessary three individual matches to claim the day's victory. First off the courts was sophomore Chelby Cooke playing at the No. 3 spot. Cooke battled through the first set to come up 7-5 and then took the second set 6-2 over Jelena Lazarevic. Freshman Daniella Silva defeated Saroop Dhatt 6-3, 6-1 for her first time playing at the No. 5 spot for the Broncos.

Senior Katie Le's victory on court one moved the Broncos into the next round. The No. 29 player defeated Maja Mladenovic of Portland in two quick sets, 6-3, 6-0. Le collected the All-WCC First-Team honors for her singles play this season. The Milpitas, Calif. native ended the 2014 regular season with a 15-2 dual singles record playing consistently at the No. 1 position for the Broncos. In addition, Le posts an outstanding 26-5 overall record during her senior season. Le stands atop the all-time leader board with 101 career wins with each season record in the top 10 best.
