No. 71 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 30 Texas Tech

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After a decisive 4-3 victory over San Jose State on Saturday, the No. 71 Santa Clara women's tennis team could not carry over its momentum to No. 30 Texas Tech on Sunday, falling 4-1 to a solid Raiders squad in the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos look ahead to reentering West Coast Conference competition when they host Loyola Marymount on Sat., Mar. 15 at 11 a.m.

Santa Clara posts a 6-4 overall dual record after its two-match weekend. The Broncos are 2-1 at home, 2-2 on the road, and 2-1 on neutral surfaces. The team is 1-3 against ranked opponents for the 2014 spring season.

The Broncos faced a challenging opponent in Texas Tech (10-5), as the No. 30 team got on the board first by winning the doubles point. The sophomore duo of Chelby Cooke and Delphine Rouvillois could not edge Lynn Kiro and Kenna Kilgo of the Raiders and fell 8-1 on court two. Almost immediately after, court three with Stephanie Skaras and Nicolette Wolny was taken 8-2 by Samantha Adams and Beatriz Machado Santos.

The Bronco partnership of Daniella Silva and Katie Le tallied the lone doubles victory for Santa Clara over Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde of Texas Tech by a score of 8-5. Silva and Le have won five out of the last seven doubles contests. The duo improves their dual record to 13-7 on the season, performing consistently at the No. 1 position for Santa Clara.

On the singles side, Santa Clara had to convert four out of the six individual matches to take the win for the day's events, but Texas Tech carried its energy from doubles into singles play. The Raider's captured the necessary singles victories on courts 4, 5, and 2 to end the day in their favor.

The Bronco's one point came from senior Katie Le, who was first off the courts at the No. 1 spot. The No. 25 player blanked Kenna Kilgo of Texas Tech in the first set, 6-0, and closed out the match with a 6-2 score in the second set. The Bronco senior has not lost a match since Feb. 14 and stands with a 7-1 record in her final dual season.

These two matches against the Spartans and the Raiders this past weekend mark the end of non-conference play for the Broncos and lead them into the heart of West Coast Conference competition for the rest of March and throughout April. Up next for Santa Clara, the Broncos host LMU on Sat., Mar. 15 at 11 a.m.
