Cal Nike Invitational Results

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team wrapped up the final day of the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. on Sunday with Bronco senior Katie Le reaching the semifinals of the top bracket and newcomer Danielle Silva taking second in the middle bracket consolation final.

Next up for the Broncos: the team will compete in the Saint Mary's Invitational Oct. 11-13 as the second tournament of the 2013-14 preseason.

"I am very happy with our showing this weekend at Cal," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "These first tournaments always help us see a couple things that we need to work on. Katie had a good tournament and our freshman Danielle Silva had a great first tournament as a Bronco. With the returners, our plan is to take what they did well, keep moving forward, and find a few things to improve upon."

Seeded No. 4 overall in the Cal Nike Invitational, Le reached the semifinal match were she met No. 2 seed Anett Schutting of Cal. Last January, then-No. 26 Le topped then-No. 9 Schutting by a score of 6-3, 6-1 in the Cal Winter Invite. This time around, Le fell in two sets, 6-0, 6-3, to the tough Cal opponent.

Another highlight of the Cal Nike Invitational came when Silva reached the finals of the Gold Singles Consolation bracket. In her first competition as a Bronco, Silva battled the No. 3 seed from Saint Mary's, Jade Frampton. After dropping the first set 4-6, Silva took the second, 6-4, to send the final match of the day into a third set. Silva could not hold on to the tiebreaker and fell to Frampton, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(10-6).

In doubles, partners Le and Silva advanced to the semifinals of the top draw where they fell to the No. 2 seed Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi of the host school Cal, 8-3. Chelby Cooke and Stephanie Skaras won the Gold doubles consolation final over BYU's Nicolette Tran and Toby Miclat.

"Overall, as a group, I was very happy," said Cabell. "We did what we were supposed to do and we are looking forward to the next tournament."

In two weeks the Broncos travel to Moraga, Calif. to compete in the Saint Mary's Invitational from Oct. 11-13.
