SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 63 Santa Clara women's tennis team looks to continue its momentum from the 4-1 victory over Boise State on Feb. 22 as the Broncos open West Coast Conference play against the University of San Francisco on Tues., Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. on the Mission Campus.
Santa Clara improves to 3-3 overall for the dual season after going 1-1 on the road this past weekend. After six matches on the road, the Broncos return home with three matches at the Degheri Tennis Center through the weekend.
This match between the Broncos and the Dons is the first WCC competition of the dual season for both squads.
In its most recent match, Santa Clara took on Boise State in Fresno, Calif. where the Bronco's strong doubles performance propelled them to a 4-1 win. With a commanding 8-4 victory from partners Katie Le and Daniella Silva on court one, the duo tallied their third-straight doubles win this season with the triumph over Boise State's Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil. Le and Silva improve to 4-2 in dual competition.
Going into the singles competition one point ahead of Boise State, Delphine Rouvillois continued her win streak by sweeping Milena Toseva on court four, 6-0, 6-0. Rouvillois's consistent play posts the sophomore's overall singles record to 4-2 for the dual season.
The Bronco's No. 28 Katie Le kicks off her final WCC season on Tuesday with a 14-4 overall singles record. Le is 3-1 in duals with two additional individual matches going unfinished, playing consistently in the No. 1 spot. Le is 11-6 overall with Silva at the No. 1 position in doubles.
Le was named to the 2014 All-WCC Preseason Team on Jan. 28 along with five other women.
University of San Francisco
USF enters Tuesday's dual on a three-match winning streak over New Mexico State, San Jose State, and most recently UC Davis. The Dons post a perfect record at home and are 4-2 on the road. Their two losses come from ranked opponents—then-No. 8 Cal on Jan. 31 and then-No. 73 Arizona on Feb. 2.
The Dons are led by Thyra Taune at the No. 1 position for singles. The freshman tallies a 20-4 singles record for the 2013-14 season. Taune entered the ITA rankings on Jan. 2 at No. 116 and is currently unranked.
For her efforts in 2013, Andrea Ka was named conference Freshman of the Year and earned a place on the All-WCC first team singles. She is one of two sophomores to make the 2014 All-WCC Preseason Team of six women.
Last Year Against the Dons
On March 4, 2013, Santa Clara captured its first 2013 WCC win at the University of San Francisco by a score of 4-3. This win on the road put the Broncos at 5-4 overall on the season.
At USF, the Broncos did not convert the doubles point and were forced to battle in the singles matches. The team won four individual victories to take the match from its Bay Area rival.
In singles play, the Broncos tallied wins at the No. 2, 4, 5, and 6 positions. Australian native Stephanie Skaras topped Yurie Hashiguchi in two straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 position. Delphine Rouvillois was equally as successful at the No. 5 spot as she defeated Marina Nikolic of the Dons, 6-4, 6-4. Andrea Ka defeated then-No. 30 Katie Le, 7-6(3), 6-1, on court one.
Senior Kelly Lamble and freshman Chelby Cooke both battled though grueling three-set matches to give the Broncos their first WCC victory of the season. At the No. 2 spot, Lamble posted a 7-6(4) to take the first set. She proceeded to drop the second, 3-6, but was able to overcome Sofia Holmberg in the final set to win 6-2. Cooke fell in her first set against Brooke Irish by a score of 5-7, but flew through the next two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
