SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After going 1-1 over the past weekend, the Santa Clara women's tennis team re-enters West Coast Conference competition on Sat., Mar. 15 against Loyola Marymount at 11 a.m. on the Mission campus. In addition, the Broncos have jumped 12 spots in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings to No. 59.
Santa Clara posts a 6-4 overall dual record after its two-match weekend. The Broncos are 2-1 at home, 2-2 on the road and 2-1 on neutral surfaces. The team is 1-3 against ranked opponents and 1-0 in WCC competition for the 2014 spring season.
The Broncos added a 4-3 win over cross-town rival San Jose State to extend its impressive four-match winning streak. The Broncos faced a challenging opponent in the Spartans, but emerged victorious in the tightly-contested matchup with four individual singles victories. Katie Le, Stephanie Skaras, Daniella Silva and Nicolette Wolny all tallied singles wins to take home the match.
On March 9, Santa Clara's four-match winning streak was snapped by then-No. 30 Texas Tech 4-1 in the Degheri Tennis Center. The Raiders captured the double's point early on and carried momentum over to the singles matches. No. 28 Le tallied the lone point for Santa Clara. The Bronco senior has not lost a match since Feb. 14 and stands with a 7-1 singles record in her final dual season.
In doubles, the Santa Clara partnership of Silva and Le has won five out of the last seven doubles contests. The duo improves their dual record to 13-7 on the season, performing consistently at the No. 1 position for squad.
The LMU match on Saturday leads Santa Clara into the heart of West Coast Conference competition for the rest of March and throughout April. The Broncos carry a 1-0 WCC record with its 4-3 win over USF on Feb. 25.
Loyola Marymount
The LMU women's tennis team will travel to Northern California this weekend to open conference play against No. 59 Santa Clara and the University of San Francisco. The Lions are currently 6-7 overall. LMU is 4-3 at home, 1-4 away and 1-0 on neutral surfaces.
The Lions' wrapped up their non-conference slate last weekend with a 4-3 setback to Florida International at home. In addition, LMU has dropped matches to UNLV, Cal Poly, and UC Santa Barbara—all opponents that Santa Clara has topped this season. The remaining nine matches of the 2014 regular season will all come against conference foes.
The Lions will face USF on Sun., Mar. 19 at 10 a.m.
Last Year Against the Lions
In 2013 WCC play, Santa Clara upset then-No. 61 LMU by a score of 5-2 in Los Angeles, Calif. The Broncos snapped the Lions' four-match winning streak on the road and gave its second loss at home that season.
Le and Jessica Agra set the tone for the day by taking the No. 1 doubles match from April Bisharat and Claudia Razzeto of the Lions, 8-4. Seniors Kelly Lamble and Maggie McGeorge solidified the doubles point with a win over Miya Jin and Reka Rohonyi, 8-6, at the No. 2 position.
On the singles side, Skaras captured the first individual win when her opponent, Reka Rohonyi, retired at the end of the second set. Skaras won the first set, 6-1, and was leading in the second, 5-2. Lamble was second off the single courts as she dominated her competitor in two sets, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot.
Chelby Cooke posted a five-match singles winning streak with a two-set victory over the Lion's Miya Jin at the No. 4 position, 7-5, 6-2. Alex Zaniewski tallied her second win of the dual season topping Tory Parravi in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot for the Broncos.
In addition, the third-seeded Santa Clara women's tennis team defeated No. 7 LMU a score of 4-2 in the second round of the 2013 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships.
