SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team completed the first day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif. on Friday. Seven players on the Bronco roster had the opportunity to showcase their talents in the third tournament of the 2013-14 preseason. The second day of Regionals continues Saturday morning with more singles and doubles matches highlighting the Broncos.
In singles play, Bronco Nicolette Wolny defeated Eastern Washington's Erin Blessing by a score of 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of 128. Sophomore Delphine Rouvillois fell to Cecilia Estlander of Cal in a tight two-set match, 7-5, 7-5. Chelby Cooke advanced to the second round by overtaking Samantha Martino of Davis, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Stephanie Skaras got a solid win over Regina Suarez of Portland by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Elaine Chesoni could not top Hana Ritterova of Portland and fell 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Daniella Silva defeated Alexa McDonald of Portland State by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
In the round of 64, No. 5 seed Katie Le defeated Megan Govi of Portland State, 6-3, 6-1. Wolny fell to the No. 1 seed Zsofia Susanyi of Cal by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Cooke captured a spot in the round of 32 by defeating Brooke Irish of San Francisco, 6-4, 6-1. Skaras could not edge Samantha Polayes of Gonzaga and fell 6-4, 6-4. Silva went up against the No. 9 seed Carol Zhao of the host Stanford and fell 6-3, 6-1 to end her ITA Regional run.
In the opening doubles round, Bronco partners Skaras and Wolny fell to Olivia Boija and Sophie Lohscheidt of Sacramento State by a score of 8-2. Duo Cooke and Rouvillois topped Nicole Koehly and Layla Sanders of Davis due to injury.
With a bye in the first round, No. 6 seed Le and Sliva fell to Caroline Doyle and Krista Hardebeck of Stanford by a tight score of 8-5. Cooke and Rouvillois could not advance past No. 7 seed Klara Fabikova and Maegan Manasse of Cal and fell 8-5 in the round of 32.
Continuing on Saturday, No. 5 Le has already solidified a spot in the singles round of 16 due to her opponent, Lina Akesson's inability to play in the round of 32 due to injury. Le will go up against the winner of No. 11 Taylor Davidson of Stanford versus Iveta Massarova of Portland at 1:00 p.m.
In addition, Cooke goes up against No. 7 seed Klara Fabikova of Cal this morning in the round of 32.
