Qualifying Singles Draw

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.—Santa Clara senior Katie Le fell in the second round in the ITA All-American Championships Qualifying Singles Draw on Tuesday, Oct. 1, to Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Le and the rest of the Bronco women's tennis team look forward to competing in the Saint Mary's Invitational on Oct. 11-13.

"It's always tough playing this tournament because I'm up against a very good player every round," said Le. "I'm went into the qualifiers as the top seed, which gave me a lot more confidence than I've had in the two past times I competed in this tournament, but it didn't end in my favor."

As the No. 2 seed in the qualifying draw, Le established a strong start to this prestigious tournament by defeating Stephanie Nauta of Virginia, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round. Later that afternoon, Le faced Nguyen of UCLA in the second round of qualifiers and could not edge her to advance.

In this year's qualifying draw, only one player—Zoe Scandalis of USC—was seeded above Le. In addition in the West Coast Conference, Saint Mary's rival Jenny Julien is seeded at No. 3 and Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine sits as the No. 7 seed.

As Santa Clara's first tennis player to receive two consecutive bids to the NCAA Singles Championships, Le holds her national ranking this season at No. 20—the highest preseason ranking in program history.

The event was the second tournament of the 2013-14 campaign. The Broncos continue their fall preseason next week at the SMC Invitational Oct. 11-13. The ITA Regional's at Stanford follow the next weekend.
