SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing on the road for the third consecutive time, the Santa Clara women's tennis team fell to No. 58 Brigham Young University in a tight 4-3 match. The Broncos return to the Mission campus on Apr. 12th and 13th to host their final home matches of the season in the Degheri Tennis Center against Portland and Gonzaga.
Santa Clara boasts a 7-8 overall dual record after its West Coast Conference loss to BYU. The Broncos are 3-2 at home, 2-5 on the road and 2-1 on neutral surfaces. The team is 2-3 in the WCC this spring season with wins over San Francisco and Loyola Marymount.
The Broncos faced a challenging competitor in BYU (9-7, 5-1 WCC), as the No. 58 team got on the board early by capturing the doubles point. The new Bronco partnership of Stephanie Skaras and Nicolette Wolny fell 8-0 to Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood on court three. Bronco duo Chelby Cooke and Katie Le could not convert at the No. 1 position and were defeated by Mayci Jones and Toby Miclat, 8-3.
On the singles side, BYU carried its energy from doubles into singles taking courts 3, 5 and 6 to close out the day in their favor.
Santa Clara's first point came from No. 20 Katie Le on court one. The Bronco senior breezed through the first set 6-2 over Mayci Jones of the Cougars and then finished off Jones in the second, 6-4. Extending her winning streak to 11, Le has not lost a match since Feb. 14 and has not dropped a set since Feb. 22. The Milpitas, Calif. native posts an impressive 12-1 record in her final dual season at Santa Clara.
The Broncos' second point came from Delphine Rouvillois, who is playing at the No. 2 position for just the fifth time in her career. The sophomore showed great strength against BYU's Meghan Sheehan-Dizon, taking the first set 6-2. Sheehan-Dizon battled back in the second, but Rouvillois proved too much for her opponent and closed out the match 7-5. The Grenoble, France native posts an 8-5 dual singles record.
Senior Stephanie Skaras tallied the third and final point for the Broncos. Skaras protrayed great strength and stamina to finish off her match throughout three long sets. The senior dominated the first set, 6-3, over opponent Toby Miclat, but fell in the second, 6-1. The Australia native battled hard in the third set defeating her competitor 7-6.
Women's tennis returns to the Degheri Tennis Center for the final weekend this season on Apr. 12th and 13th. The Broncos host Portland on Saturday, which features the first women's tennis Alumni Day. On Sunday, Santa Clara takes on Gonzaga where they will honor its two seniors before the match for Senior Day.
