SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Berkeley, Calif.) – The Santa Clara women's tennis team competed in the first day of the Cal Nike Fall Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. on Friday. Seven players on the Bronco roster had the opportunity to showcase their talents in the first matches of the 2014-15 preseason. The second day of the tournament continues Saturday with more singles and doubles matches highlighting the Broncos.

In the White Doubles draw, senior Elaine Chesoni matched up with UC Davis's Claire Meunier to compete in doubles against Anne Susdorf of Fresno and Gen McCloskey. Chesoni and her Davis partner fell 8-2.

Two Santa Clara duos participated in the Gold doubles round of 16. Junior Chelby Cooke and freshman Zeina El Tawil went up against No. 4 seed Blaga Delic and Sheila Morales of Nevada but came up short 8-5. Junior Delphine Rouvillois paired with newcomer Danielle Zinn and were barely edged by Ana Loaiza and Tori Trylovich of Sacramento.

On the singles side, Cooke tallied a strong first win of the fall preseason with a three-set victory over Arizona State's Joanna Smith, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Cooke then advanced to the Blue round of 16 where she faced No. 3 seed from Cal, Maegan Manasse, but fell in two sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Newcomer sophomore Nabila Farah performed well in the Gold singles bracket. She defeated fellow West Coast Conference competitor Parminder Kaur of Saint Mary's, 6-3, 6-1. In the next round of 16, Farah could not top No. 2 seed Cessi Estlander of the host team Cal.

El Tawil bounced back in the consolation round of the Gold singles draw getting her first collegiate win over Davis's Kristy Jorgenson. El Tawil went down in the first set 2-6 and came back in the second set winning the tiebreaker 7-6(4). They played a third set tiebreak where the Cairo, Egypt native won by a score of 1-0(6).
