Women’s Tennis Concludes Doubleheader with Two Home Wins

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's tennis team completed its first weekend of spring play by picking up two home wins against Academy of Art and Sonoma State.  The Broncos followed the 4-0 victory over the Urban Knights of Academy of Art with another 7-0 shutout of the Sonoma State Seawolves.

"I was nervous at the beginning but the girls handled it really well," said head coach Ben Cabell.  "I'm really happy with the way we played today."

Cabell couldn't have asked for much more, as the day's back-to-back wins came without any Santa Clara match- or set-losses.  Each of the eight Broncos played a match and recorded a win.

Facing the Urban Knights, Santa Clara started off the morning with a doubles win by juniors Chelby Cooke and Delphine Rouvillois taking down Dorota Markowska and Kinga Kurczbuch 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.  The Santa Clara sophomore pairing of Nabila Farah and Daniella Silva captured the doubles point as they put away Nina Gajdosikova and Jenny Johansson 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.

In singles play against Academy of Art, the middle of the Bronco squad pulled away to bring home the team victory for Santa Clara.  Playing at the No. 4 spot, Nabila Farah first defeated Jenny Johansson 6-0, 6-0.  No. 3 Chelby Cooke and No. 2 Daniella Silva followed up by marking respective wins against Annika Schneider 6-0, 6-1 and Dorota Markowska 6-1, 6-2.

After a brief break the Broncos lined up against the Sonoma State Seawolves.  Danielle Zinn and the fresh legs of Elaine Chesoni beat Karlee Budge and Julie Rea 6-1 for the Bronco's first double win.  Freshmen Zeina El Tawil and Riley Morgan picked up the win against Kaitlyn Haithcock and Jordyn Kearney 6-1 for the Broncos to gain the doubles point.

Following the doubles matches, the individual players took the court.  Santa Clara knocked down the Seawolves successively, starting with Zeina El Tawil beating Karlee Budge 6-0, 6-2.  Fresh off her doubles win, Elaine Chesoni once again won against Julie Rea 6-1, 6-0.  Rouvillois clinched the Santa Clara match win, defeating Leire Martinez 6-2, 6-2.  To finish out the day, the Broncos at the Nos. 5, 3, and 2 spots all closed out their matches.  Danielle Zinn defeated Jacquelyn Ward 6-0, 6-4; Chelby Cooke defeated Jordyn Kearney 6-1, 6-4 and Nabila Farah beat Kaitlyn Haithcock 6-4, 6-4.

"I'm very happy the way we accomplished what we wanted to," said Cabell.  "We got some experience both in our system and on the court."

The Broncos will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming matches.  Santa Clara next takes the court against San Jose State on Sun., Feb. 21 at the Degheri Tennis Center.
