ITA Regionals Draws and Results
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's tennis team wrapped up play on Sun., Oct. 12 at Stanford University after competing for three days in Palo Alto, Calif. at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium for the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals.
Seven players for the Broncos participated and picked up some valuable experience during their play in a myriad of singles and doubles matches.
"The team did really well overall," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "We made some improvements from the first tournament and we will continue to get better throughout the fall."
In singles, five Broncos took home wins. Chelby Cooke won her first match of the tournament in a comeback fashion against Lize Leenknecht of Washington State by a score of 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Nabila Farah earned two wins of her own against Sayaka Tsugai of Cal Poly, 6-0, 6-3, and Kristy Jorgensen of Davis with a three-set score of 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(6). Zeina El Tawil beat Carolina Lopez of Eastern Washington 6-4, 3-0 while Riley Morgan conquered Claire Meunier of Davis 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation round of 128.
In doubles, Santa Clara duo Cooke and Farah and partners Farah and Danielle Zinn both beat Allen and Chen of Washington by a score of 8-4 in the consolation round of 32, while El Tawil and Morgan defeated Reimers and van der Aarssens of Portland 8-1.
Junior Delphine Rouvillois collected some big wins in her run through the singles portion of the tournament. Rouvillois took down two opponents Frederique Sleiffer of Davis and Dané Vorster of Portland State with scores of 6-3, 6-2 to kick off the day on Friday. She then moved on to face Elizaveta Luzina of Washington State – the No. 11 seed in the tournament – against whom she came back after falling in the first set 4-6. Rouvillois battled back going 6-1 and 6-3 in the following sets to progress to the round of 16. Rouvillois showed poise even as she fell to No. 11 Maegan Manasse of Cal 6-2, 6-1.
"Delphine did very well and had a great tournament. I'm really proud of the way she played," said Cabell.
The Broncos play next at the Saint Mary's Invitational in Moraga, Calif. starting on Oct. 24 through Oct. 26.
