Women's Tennis Edged By Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Santa Clara women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by the Gonzaga Bulldogs in its penultimate match of the regular season.  The Broncos are now 7-10 overall with a 3-5 WCC record.

The Bulldogs started with the early lead from the doubles point, winning 6-1 on Courts 3 and 1.

The Broncos went down 2-0 as Melanie Yates beat Danielle Zinn at No. 5.  At position 3, Chelby Cooke responded with a dominant individual match over Alex Bourguignon, winning 6-1, 6-1 and putting the Broncos on the board.

Gonzaga put away two matches, as Franziska Koehler beat Riley Morgan on Court 6 and Katie Edwards won over Nabila Farah at No. 1. 

Zeina El Tawil and Daniella Silva were the last to finish their matches for the Broncos, both taking their opponents deep into the third set.  While El Tawil was eventually upended by Kylie Peek 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8), Silva came out on top of Samantha Polayes 7-5, 3-6, 1-0(10-7).

Santa Clara is back on the court Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center to take on Portland in its last match before the WCC Championships.
