Women’s Tennis Begins Conference Play

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's tennis team kicks off conference play in San Francisco Sun., March 8 at 4 p.m. against the San Francisco Dons.

"We're really excited for out first conference match," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell.  "We have been looking forward to it since we put the schedule out."

Santa Clara is 2-5 overall, with an 0-1 record on the road.  In their third consecutive away match, the Broncos will look to snap a streak of five losses.  Most recently, Santa Clara was upended by Oregon and Santa Barbara in Southern California on Feb. 21 and 22.  But they have had two weeks off in preparation for the Dons.

San Francisco is currently 5-4 overall, with a 3-0 home record.  In their past three matches they lost to No. 41 Long Beach State, beat UC Davis, then fell to another ranked team in No. 32 Arizona State.  The Dons' squad features No. 79 nationally ranked singles player Andrea Ka.  Ka plays at the No. 1 singles spot and holds a 5-2 dual record.  Thyra Taune at the No. 2 singles spot is 6-2 in dual play.

Both teams have played San Jose State as well as Fresno State, with both the Broncos and Dons coming out on the losing ends of the matches.

"We've played a lot of their players, and we know what to expect," added Cabell.  "It's always close with USF.  We're pumped up for this match."
