SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Berkeley, Calif.) – The Santa Clara women's tennis team completed the second day of the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. on Saturday. Bronco newcomers Riley Morgan and Zeina El Tawil will both advance to their semifinal consolation matches on Sunday.
In singles on Saturday, Morgan defeated Sacramento's Andie Mouzes in the White consolation draw by a score of 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the semifinal match on Sunday. Elaine Chesoni fell to Zoe Oedekerk of Cal Poly in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. In the Gold singles consolation quarterfinals, El Tawil topped Dane Joubert of Cal Poly in a third-set tiebreak. El Tawil handled Joubert in the first set, 6-2, but the Mustang was able to battle back in the second set, going 6-4. The Bronco did back down and took the match with a tiebreak score of 8-6, advancing to semifinal play on Sunday.
Three Broncos, Delphine Rouvillois, Chelby Cooke and Nabila Farah participated in the round robin event on Saturday. Rouvillois won the first set but fell in a tough three set match to Nevada's Sheila Morales, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3). Nabila Farah also battled to the end but the 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (7) match ended in her opponent, Gergana Boncheva of Pacific's favor.
In doubles competition, Santa Clara partners Farah and Morgan reached the semifinal match of the White bracket with a quarterfinal victory over Cal Poly's duo Molly Reed and Zoe Oedekerk, 6-3, 6-2. They then put up a strong fight in the semifinal match against Sacramento's Andie Mouzes and Saskia Angerer, but fell 6-3, 6-4.
Two Bronco duos participated in the Gold doubles consolation draw and made it to the quarterfinal round.
All final matches will take place on Sunday.
