Women’s Water Polo Faces Cal St. Monterey Bay

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team travels to play Cal St. Monterey Bay on Saturday at noon.

"We play this game on the road every year to start the season, and it is usually a close contest," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We expect a good game, and it is always a valuable experience to play in a tough environment on the road."

Santa Clara has a 12-game winning streak spanning the last six years against Cal St. Monterey Bay (0-1). Last year, the Broncos (1-1) beat the Otters, 13-7 and 8-5.

Last weekend, the Broncos split a pair in the three-day Aggie Invite Tournament in Davis, beating Fresno Pacific, 11-5, after losing to UC Davis, 15-5.

"I thought our counterattack was very good last weekend, especially in our second game," said Wilbur. "We definitely want to continue pushing the counter attack next weekend and throughout the season."

The Broncos are using this week of practice to focus on defense and hone their offensive attacks.

"We are covering different defensive situations, and then also have quicker awareness and better communication getting into these defenses," said Wilbur. "We also are working on our 6 on 5 offense which is definitely an area we can improve upon from last weekend."
