Women’s Water Polo Ends Season With Victory at GCC Championship

FRESNO, Calif. – The Santa Clara water polo senior class helped the team end the season on a high note.

Hannah Buck (four goals/four kickouts drawn), Annie Eldredge (four assists/four steals) and Lauren Paxton (two goals/one assist), all playing in their final game, propelled the Broncos to an 11-9 win over Concordia on Sunday in the Golden Coast Conference Championship.

Hailey Eberle had two goals and two assists, and Maggie Oys scored twice and added one helper for Santa Clara (9-18), which scored on six of its 12 attempts with the extra attacker and never trailed in the seventh-place game of the three-day tournament.

Dailynn Santoro tallied three goals and Hanna Jordan and Madison Ravelo had two apiece for the Eagles (9-15) who rallied from an early three-goal deficit and tied the game three times.

Santoro's strike knotted the score at 7-all with 1:23 left in the third quarter, but Eberle answered with a goal 50 seconds later.

Buck provided the difference in the final quarter, scoring twice, including the game-winner on a penalty shot with 6:09 left that extended the lead to 10-8.

Santoro added another marker, but Kelly Frumkin scored an insurance goal for the Broncos who forced three turnovers, including two steals by Eldredge, in the final 4 minutes.

"We had great contributions from everybody, but our seniors all played well," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Hannah had two goals in the fourth quarter, Paxton played great 2-meter defense throughout the game and Annie was big on both offense and defense. It was great to see them lead our team to a win in their final game. I'm very happy and proud of them."

Buck got the offense rolling in the early going as her first two goals helped build a 4-1 lead.

Concordia, which was outshot the Broncos 30-25, ended up tying the game at 6-all midway through the third quarter.

Lydia Dadd earned the win in net for the Broncos with 10 saves, including four in the final 9 minutes of the game.
