SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Annie Eldredge scored a career-high four goals, Hailey Eberle posted career-best five assists and the defense held Sonoma State at bay in the second half of a 10-6 win for Santa Clara women's water polo on Saturday.
After trailing by three in the first half, the Seawolves (5-9) rallied midway through the third quarter, scoring two quick goals to tie the game at 6-all.
But the Broncos (6-10) rallied as Katie Francis and Kelly Frumkin scored late in the third to make it 8-6.
Eldredge added a pair of insurance goals in the final period and Seawolves missed their last seven shots, going scoreless over the final 12:30 of the game.
Annika Erickson had three goals and Taylor Brooks three assists for the Seawolves.
Eldredge and Emma Allegrucci got the game off to a quick start, scoring twice for the Broncos, in the first two minutes. Emma Weddle quickly responded, putting the Seawolves on the board.
Sonoma State's Hailey Gellert tied the game 2-2 on an exclusion goal. By early in the second quarter, the Broncos had pulled ahead 5-2.
The Seawolves went just 1-for-11 with the extra attacker.
The Broncos connected on only two of their 11 chances, but Francis' game-winner came right after the expiration of a kickout and one of Eldredge's fourth-quarter strikes came on the man advantage.
"In the second half, I really liked our team defense and 6-on-5 offense," Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Both were key in winning a close game."
Lydia Dadd posted six saves to earn the win in net for the Broncos. Brooke Sullivan made 11 saves for Sonoma State.
