SAN DIEGO – San Diego State turned a one-goal affair into a comfortable lead late in the third quarter and pulled away for a 4-1 victory over Santa Clara women's water polo on Thursday.
Hannah Carrillo scored twice and Shelby Kraft had one goal and one assist to lead the way for the Aztecs (11-11, 4-1 Golden Coast Conference) who scored three times in the final 4 minutes of the third period to build a 4-0 lead.
In their two-game road trip opener, the Broncos (6-12, 0-2) were able to generate more shots in the second half compared to the first (14 to 6), but could not solve San Diego State netminder Maura Cantoni who turned aside 12 shots.
Santa Clara tallied its lone goal on the power play, but went scoreless on the other five opportunities.
Maggie Oys scored on a feed from Kelly Frumkin with 5:49 left in the game to close the gap to three goals, but the Broncos missed their final three shots.
Lydia Dadd suffered the loss in net, registering nine blocks.
