BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Naomi Wong had her second-straight solid round while Sarah Busey and Lauren Shew each had a tournament-best score on Tuesday for Santa Clara women's golf during final-day action at The Valley Invitational.
The Broncos shot a 28-over-par 316 after carding a 658 (331-327) on Monday at the par-72, 6,029-yard Bakersfield Country Club course to move up one spot and finish ninth in the team standings.
Wong finished tied for 19th at 19-over 235 (81-77-77) to lead the undermanned Broncos who only had four players available for the season-opening tournament.
Busey and Shew each tied for 29th at 27-over-par. Busey had rounds of 84-80-79 and Shew carded rounds of 81-83-79. Marie Jordaan, who like Shew was playing in her first collegiate event, was tied for 56th at 37-over 253 (85-87-81).
"It was a good trip and we were glad to get the season underway," head coach Krystal Kelly. "The scores weren't what we were hoping for but the golf course was very challenging. I'm encouraged and good things are to come."
Cal Poly, which served as co-host to the two-day event with CSU Bakersfield, won the tournament with 44-over total of 908 (303-305-200), six shots ahead of Boise State (319-296-299) and seven clear of Cal State Fullerton (313-299-303).
Brittany Shin of Cal State Fullerton won the individual title at 3-over 219 (76-69-74).
