SAN FRANCISCO - Claire Choi of Santa Clara women's golf put herself in position to make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open, but ultimately came up just short.
The first Bronco to reach a major championship event, Choi carded a 36-hole total of 10-over-par 152, only four shots below the cut line, at the 76th edition of the event, which is being held at The Olympic Club.
Only four amateurs made the cut and she was tied for sixth among that group at the conclusion of Friday's second round.
Yuka Saso led the field at 6-under, one of only 11 players below par.
Choi was tied for 69th after Thursday's opening-round 4-over 75 and hung around the projected and ultimate cut line of 6-over through the second round. The low 60 individuals, including ties, advanced to the final two rounds.
Teeing off from the ninth hole in the second round, the junior overcame a double bogey on the par-4 10th with back-to-back birdies on the Nos. 12 and 13.
After going 5-over on the final three holes of the back nine, Choi climbed back to 7-over with a birdie on the par-5 first. But a bogey on No. 3 was followed by a double bogey on the following hole. She ended up with a 77.
Choi qualified for the tournament by winning her sectional qualifier last month in Hawai'i.
