FRESNO, Calif. – Sarah Busey once again had success on a familiar course and Lauren Shew recorded her best round as a collegian to lead Santa Clara women's golf during opening-day action at the Fresno State Classic.
Busey shot an even-par 144 (74-70) on Monday and sits in a tie for eighth after 36 holes of the annual two-day event that is held at Copper River Country Club.
Shew followed a collegiate-best 2-under 70 in the first round with a 75 and is at 1-over in a tie for 11th for the Broncos who are tied for eighth with Nevada at 21-over 597 (301-296).
Stanford leads the 15-team field at 8-under 568. Fresno State, the host school, is tied with Long Beach State for second at 4-over.
Harriet Lynch of Fresno State is atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under 134. Rachel Heck of Stanford is second at 7-under.
Emily Sumner was next on the scoring list for the Broncos. She is tied for 43rd at 7-over 151 (77-74).
Busey jumped 20 spots with her second-round score that included four birdies. Two years ago in this tournament, Busey had a program-record tying 67 in the final round to help the Broncos finish third.
Shew helped herself on the par-5s where she was 4-under over the 36 holes. That total was tied for second-best among the field.
Marie Jordaan, who is tied for 65th at 13-over 157 (80-77), and Naomi Wong, who is tied for 74th at 18-over, round out the lineup for Santa Clara.
