MARICOPA, Ariz. - Emily Sumner's top-30 finish helped highlight the performance of Santa Clara women's golf at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.

Summer had a 9-over-par total of 225 (71-79-75) to end the two-day event that concluded Tuesday in a tie for 28th, helping the Broncos finished 15th.

Lauren Shew improved 20 spots from the second round to tie for 53rd at 15-over 231 (76-79-76) for Santa Clara which totaled 65-over 929 (299-318-312) in its first tournament in more than a month. Sarah Busey was one shot back in a tie for 62nd (74-79-79).

New Mexico State won the 20-team event with a score of 5-over 869 (285-294-290). South Dakota was second at 12-over 876 (290-284-302).

Leading after each of the first two rounds, Brittany Shin of Cal State Fullerton held on to win the individual title with a 5-under 211 (67-71-73). Tagiralani Luafalealo of Grand Canyon was second at 3-under (71-68-74).

Summer was helped by her prowess on the par-3s. She was was tied for first in scoring with four other golfers at 1-under overall on those holes in the three rounds.

"The first round was our best and we made 15 birdies in in the first two rounds, which was fun to watch," Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly said of the team's performance.

Playing as an individual for the Broncos, Marie Jordaan shot 19-over 235 (79-76-80) to end in a tie for 74th.

Olivia Venderby and Naomi Wong rounded out the Santa Clara participants. Venderby was tied for 92nd at 26-over 242 (78-81-83) and Wong was 106th with a total of 247 (83-82-82).

"We were off for a few weeks so it was nice getting back into competition," Kelly said. "We have a right turn a round for Fresno, but we definitely know what we need to work on."
