Women’s Golf Finishes 10th at Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif.Lauren Shew and Sarah Busey each finished in the top 20 to highlight the performance of the Santa Clara women's golf team at the Fresno State Classic which concluded Tuesday.

Shew tied for 12th, the best finish of her young career, and Busey was tied for 19th, her top showing of the season.

Shew carded a 2-over-par 218 (70-75-73) for the Broncos who ended up 10th in the annual two-day event that was played at Copper River Country Club. Her opening-round score was her collegiate-best.

"Lauren had an incredible week," Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly said. "Her top-12 finish was very impressive, as this was a strong field."

Busey posted a 4-over 220 (74-70 76) and was tied for eighth after Monday's opening 36 holes. She had four birdies during the second round.

"Sarah had a great first and second round," Kelly said. "She really got on a roll during the second round."

Santa Clara wasn't able to carry the momentum from the second round after entering the final 18 holes in a tie for eighth. The Broncos posted a total of 37-over 901 (301-296-304) at the 15-team tournament.

The team's second-round total was its second-best of the season.

"I'm really proud of our team," Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly said. "They have made tremendous progress since February. It's nice to see them starting to play with some confidence. We have been working hard and everything is starting to click."

Stanford cruised to the victory with an 18-under 846. Host Fresno State was second at 11-over.

Rachel Heck of Stanford won the individual title with a 16-under 200, six shots ahead of runner-up Brianna Navarrosa of USC.

Emily Sumner finished third among the Santa Clara entries. She was tied for 47th at 12-over 228 (77-74-77).

Marie Jordaan and Naomi Wong rounded out the lineup.

Jordaan was tied for 66th at 22-over 238 (80-77-81) and Wong tied for 70th with a total of 24-over 240 (81-81-78).

"This tournament should give us some momentum as we head into the conference championship next week," Kelly said.

The Broncos will play in the West Coast Conference Championships (April 22-24) in Henderson, Nevada.
