SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On Monday afternoon, the SCU women's tennis team closed out regular season dual matches hosting University of Texas-Pan American. The match was a hard fought battle from the start, but the UTPA Broncs edged out SCU 4-3. Myra Davoudi, Carmen Pham, and Lindsay McBride came out with singles victories, but it was not enough to hold off UTPA. The Broncos are now preparing for WCC Championships this weekend.
Monday's match started off with a battle for the doubles point. Pham and Courtney Hull defeated UTPA's Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu at No. 3 doubles 8-4. Stephanie Galainena and Ashley Pane had many great rallies at the No. 1 position against Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima of UTPA, but could not catch a break, falling 8-2. At the No. 2 position, Myra Davoudi and Meghan Madden forced a tie-break point against Silke Buksik and Megan Bedeau, but the UTPA duo gained momentum late in the match and edged out SCU 9-8 (0).
Singles action was just as exciting. SCU gained solid wins from Davoudi, Pham, and McBride at the No. 2, 3, and 4 positions. Davoudi earned a point by defeating Cirne-Lima in a decisive victory, winning 7-6 (10), 6-0. Pham faced off against UTPA's Bedeau, defeating her in a long fought match, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. The Broncos' third point came from senior Linsday McBride who finished off Willerding 6-4, 6-2. McBride has won two consecutive singles matches to head into conference championships.
The Broncos have closed out their regular season dual matches playing strong tennis and head into West Coast Conference Championship matchups this Friday, April 18. Opponents are yet to be determined, but action continues this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Moraga, Calif.
