Women's Tennis Finishes Season, Head Coach Cabell Excited About Future

May 1, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team ended its season about two weeks ago on an improving note. The team went into the WCC tournament seeded 8th and finished the weekend in the 6th place position. Now the team is looking to improve further this off-season and carry over the momentum to next season. Despite losing two key players in seniors Lindsay McBride and Myra Davoudi, head coach Ben Cabell is looking forward to off-season improvements and working for a successful season next year.

The Broncos finished the season with a record of 5-18, but those numbers do not reflect the players' talent or the season-long team improvements. Davoudi and McBride teamed up to become a threat in every doubles match, while freshman Carmen Pham stepped up and contributed points in singles and doubles right from the start.

"Carmen has been fantastic for us. She made the honorable mention all-WCC team and has the best record on the team. She has a lot of room to improve before next year and is going to be a good asset for us next year," commented Cabell.

The Broncos made out with a number of big wins this season. In the beginning of the women's dual season, the Broncos defeated a No. 22 UC Santa Cruz team 6-1. Later, in February, the Broncos dominated the San Jose State Spartans in a Rivalry Series match 6-1. Nearing the end of the regular season, the team fell in a WCC road match against Portland 3-4, but faced the Pilots again in the WCC Championships and came out with a clutch win, 4-3, to put the Broncos in position for fifth place.

Overall, Cabell is proud of how his team performed this season and is confident in the potential of his underclassmen, "We've had a tough season this year but our girls kept fighting and did well all season long. I think we have a bright future as a team and that we can build on the improvements we've had all season. Our freshman have done well and have room to get better."

This off-season Cabell is going to have his team working hard, meeting workout and playing requirements to get ready for next season, "We're going to work as hard as we can. We ended the season on a good note and we want to build on that and carry it over to next season." The Broncos will be back in action next fall looking to build on this season's success and prove just how good they are.
