FRESNO, Calif. - Seniors Myra Davoudi and Lindsay McBride finished off the first day of the Bulldog Classic with impressive three-set victories to help the Santa Clara women's tennis team end the first day of the season on a high note. McBride won two matches in the main draw to move to the Round of 16, while Davoudi's three-set win came in the consolation round. Other winners on the day included freshmen Courtney Hull and Ashley Pane. McBride and Hull also teamed up for a doubles win.
In singles, McBride breezed in her first match against Danielle Kjar of Fresno State 6-0, 6-1 and then met Ly-Huong Dinh of Nevada in the Round of 32. The two had previously met in the final of the consolation draw at the Saint Mary's Invitational in 2006 with Dinh winning that match. Today, McBride turned the tables with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win to get through to the next round.
Seven other Broncos participated in singles, with Samantha Georgino out due to injury. In the Round of 64, Carmen Pham and Stephanie Galainena moved to the next round with byes, while Ashley Pane won her match convincingly. Pane knocked off Anna Guzman of San Jose State 6-1, 6-1. Myra Davoudi, Meghan Madden, Courtney Hull and Andrea Kwong all fell in the first round.
The draw did the Broncos no favors in the Round of 32 as Pham went up against the No. 4 seed and Galainena faced the No. 2 seed. Pham lost 6-0, 6-1 to Maria Mizyuk of Nevada and Galainena played hard, but fell 6-0, 6-2 to Anastasia Petukhova. Pane also dropped her Round of 32 match 6-1, 6-1.
In the consolation bracket, Davoudi and Hull were able to earn victories to stay alive in the back draw. Hull played a good all-around match to defeat Amandine Ferot of Fresno Pacific 6-4, 6-0. In the final match of the day, Davoudi put in some overtime to get her win. After falling behind by a set, Davoudi stormed back to win the second set 6-3. In the third-set supertiebreaker, Davoudi overcame a match point against her to finish off a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) win.
In doubles, the Broncos had three of their four tandems move into the Round of 16, with Galainena and Pham and Madden and Pane earning byes. Hull and McBride picked up the Broncos only on-court doubles win of the day with an 8-5 triumph over Guzman and Hadzisabic of San Jose State. Davoudi and Kwong were knocked out in the Round of 32 by Karavayeva and Klokotzky of Fresno Pacific 8-3.
In the Round of 16, SCU saw all three doubles teams fall. Galainena and Pham ran into the tournament's No. 1 seed of Kucerkova and Petukhova of Fresno State and lost 8-0, while Madden and Pane took on the No. 5 seed, Lyssenko and Tsan of Sacramento State. Despite playing them tough, the Bronco tandem dropped a close 8-5 decision. Hull and McBride went down 8-2 to Karavayeva and Klokotzky.
