SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Santa Clara baseball team will be looking for its second-straight win Friday when it travels to Santa Barbara for the first game of a three-game series against the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara. First pitch in Friday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Cesear Uyesaka Stadium with sophomore Matt Travis (Glendora, Calif.) earning the start for Santa Clara.

The Broncos are 1-6 on the season following Tuesday's a 1-0 shutout of UC Davis at Buck Shaw Stadium. Three freshman pitchers combined to allow just five hits and struck out nine en route to the first SCU win of the season. The Broncos opened the season at No. 2-ranked USC and have played series' against Cal and Fresno State.

"This weekend's series will be a good test for us," said Head Coach Mike Cummins. "I am encouraged by a few key aspects of our game right now and we will continue to work on getter better and growing as a team. We have some younger players who are really playing well for us at this early point in the season and that is encouraging."

Freshman John Redmond (Canton, Ohio) pitched seven shutout innings against UC Davis and earned his first career win on Tuesday. Fellow freshmen Kellan McConnell (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Jared Anderson (Tucson, Ariz.) closed out the game with four strikeouts in the final two innings, while Anderson earned his first career save. Both are slated to earn starting nods in the UCSB series.

UCSB is 1-3 on the season following a heartbreaking 6-5 extra-inning loss at UCLA on Wednesday. The Gauchos led the game by a score of 4-0 after five innings but were unable to close out the win. UCSB opened the season with a 15-8 win over San Jose State and have lost two their last three games by a single run.

Santa Clara returns home for a single game against Sacramento State on Feb. 20. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. For tickets, contact the Athletic Ticket Office at 408/554-4660. Single game tickets are available at the gate.
