Headley Named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America

June 21, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Bronco second baseman Jack Headley was named a first team selection to Louisville Slugger's Freshman All-America Baseball Team, announced this week.

Headley, the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, started 55 games at second base for Santa Clara, finishing the season with a league-leading 82 hits and a team-best .380 batting average. The Gilroy native drove home 40 runs and collected 24 extra-base hits.

After redshirting the 1999 campaign following a transfer from Miami, Headley torched WCC pitching to the tune of a .445 clip in 27 league contests to also earn a second-team All-Conference selection. In addition to batting average and hits, Headley lead Santa Clara in slugging percentage (.551), on-base percentage (.451) and total bases (119) while tying for the team lead with five triples and ranking second in RBI (40), doubles (15) and home runs (4). Headley also boasted a team-best 16 game hitting streak while hitting safely in 27 of his last 28 games and 48 of 55 overall.

Headley joins five other WCC players on the All-America list. Left-handed pitchers Jared Hemus of San Diego and Jason Martina of San Francisco, as well as second basemen Mike McCoy of San Diego, Eric Rodland of Gonzaga and Mark Teahen of Saint Mary's all earned honorable mention recognition.
