SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Chris Zavatsky has been named an assistant baseball coach and pitching coach, Santa Clara head baseball coach Mike Cummins announced Friday, August 11.

"I am delighted to add Chris to our staff," Cummins said. "He's a detailed coach who's knowledge will be of great benefit to our program, especially our five incoming freshmen pitchers."

Zavatsky replaces former assistant baseball coach Troy Buckley, who accepted a position at Long Beach State University.

Zavatsky will be responsible for the development of Bronco pitchers and will also serve as recruiting coordinator.

"This is an exciting opportunity," Zavatsky said. "The prospect of developing Santa Clara's talented young pitchers is a challenge I am looking forward to."

A 1990 graduate of USC, Zavatsky spent the past year as the head coach at Glendale Community College. At GCC, he was responsible for all phases of the sport's program, including planning, recruiting, coaching, scheduling, budget management, academic monitoring, staffing and community relations. Zavatsky also spent seven years at the College of the Canyons in Valencia, where his pitchers led the Western State Conference with fewest team walks each season and lowest team ERA three times en route to four league championships. In all, Zavatsky has coached 17 all-conference pitchers in eight years, seven of which have advanced to the pros.

Zavatsky began his new position Aug. 1.
