SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick announced today the non-renewal of head baseball coach Mike Cummins' contract upon its expiration at the end of June.

With Cummins' compiled record of 92-132 in the past four seasons, Levick said she intends to move the program in a new direction and will begin a national search for his replacement immediately.

"I thank Mike for his years of service to the Bronco baseball program and to Santa Clara University," Levick added. "It was a difficult decision, but one made in the best interest and future of the baseball program."

As a 1979 graduate of Santa Clara, Cummins has been associated with the University for the past 25 years. Prior to his appointment as head coach in 1998, he spent the previous 17 seasons as an assistant coach on the Bronco staff under former head coaches Jerry McClain and John Oldham.

A native of Monterey, Cummins played two seasons at Monterey Peninsula College for his father, Larry, before transferring to Santa Clara in the fall of 1977. He was a standout catcher of the 1978 and '79 Bronco teams. Additionally, Cummins helped lead the team to an NCAA Regional appearance in 1978 and was a second-team All-Northern California Baseball Association selection in 1979.

"I have a great fondness for Santa Clara University and each and every one of the student-athletes I have been fortunate enough to coach," said Cummins, who began his coaching career in 1980 at Buchser High School in Santa Clara. "Baseball's been a part of my entire life and I'll look forward to new professional opportunities."
