Broncos Baseball Pulls 12-8 Victory Over Cowboys

STILLWATER, Okla. -

Oklahoma State's baseball team opened its 11-game homestand with a 12-8 setback to Santa Clara on Tuesday night before 1,282 fans at Reynolds Stadium.

The Broncos, 13-18 overall, jumped out in front in the first inning on a two-run home run by first baseman Matt Queen, who finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI.

SCU extended the lead to 3-0 with a run in the second before exploding for a five-spot in the third. The Broncos chased OSU starter Darren Heal after 1.1 innings. The Cowboy righthander took the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season.

OSU, 23-10 on the season, got on the board in the fourth with a run before trading a pair of runs with the Broncos in the fifth.

In the frame, Paul Powell and Jake Bollig each recorded RBI singles to cut the deficit to 10-3.

Santa Clara countered with a RBI triple by Mike Theoharis and a run-scoring single by Jack Headley in the sixth to push the lead back to nine runs.

Cowboy second baseman Nebasett Brown blasted a two-run shot over the rightfield wall in the seventh before the Pokes tacked on three in the bottom of the eighth, including a two-run double by pinch hitter Brad Bouris, to draw within four.

However, Bronco reliever Chad Fillinger retired six consecutive batters to close out the game and preserve the win. Kellan McConnell worked five innings to pick up the win and move to 1-1 on the season.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
