Toreros Take Game 3 of WCC Series at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego limited Santa Clara University to four hits and struck out eight in a 8-2 win over the Broncos to claim a WCC series victory Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Tony Perez took the win for San Diego (26-14, 12-6 WCC) after allowing just one hit and two runs in the first five innings of the game. Matt Travis (1-8) received the loss for Santa Clara, who fell to 14-24 overall and 10-8 in the WCC. With the loss, combined with a San Francisco win over Saint Mary's, the Broncos fall into a tie with the Dons for first-place in the WCC's Coast Division.

San Diego opened the scoring in the first inning when leadoff hitter Mike McCoy doubled to left field. McCoy advanced to third on a passed ball and was knocked home by Greg Sain on a sacrifice fly to left field. The Toreros added two more runs in the third inning when McCoy knocked in Tom Caple on a single back to the pitcher and Diaz Miron scored on a Sain single.

The Broncos attempted a comeback in the middle innings, scoring one run in the fourth and fifth stanza's. Jack Headley opened the fourth inning for Santa Clara by advancing to first base after being struck by a pitch from Perez. He advanced to second on a walk, then scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Matt Queen. Santa Clara's second run came on third baseman Kellen McConnell's first career home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

San Diego clinched the win with a three-run fifth inning then added insurance runs in the sixth and ninth innings. The Toreros were led at the plate by right fielder Joe Lima, who went 3-for-5 from the plate with three RBI. Catcher Luis Diaz Miron went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

The Broncos are in action Tuesday night against cross-town rival San Jose State. First pitch at Buck Shaw Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
