SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (3-4) couldn't quite complete a three-game sweep of visiting Santa Clara (2-8), as the Broncos edged the Gauchos 6-5 on a gray Sunday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Santa Clara went up 4-0 after one and one half innings and UCSB could never catch up. The Gauchos made it 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth but that was the end of the scoring, as both teams went scoreless over the final three innings.
Santa Clara tagged Gaucho starter James Garcia (1-1) for six runs on seven hits in five-innings. Joe Diefenderfer and Matt Queen each had two hits for the Broncos. Diefenderfer (1-1) also picked up the win for Santa Clara, allowing five Gaucho runs in five and two thirds. Anthony Rea got the save, throwing three and one third shutout innings.
Santa Clara will return to Buck Shaw Stadium for a single game on Tuesday against Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
