Headley Named MVP of Cape Cod Championship

Aug. 14, 2000

CAPE COD, Mass. -- - Bronco second baseman Jack Headley was named most valuable player of the Cape Cod Championship, as his team captured the 2000 league title this past weekend.

Headley's team, the Brewster Whitecaps, swept the Hyannis Mets in two straight games to capture the 2000 Arnold Mycock Cape League Championship Trophy.

The Whitecaps did not disappoint the 5,000 fans in attendance at McKeon Field Sunday for game two of the best-of-three championship series.

Headley hit .312 during the regular season with 25 RBI to help lead the Whitecaps to the regular season East Division title, the East Division playoffs title and the Cape League Championship title.

Headley, the 2000 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, started 55 games at second base for Santa Clara, finishing the season with a league-leading 82 hits and a team-best .380 batting average. The Gilroy native drove home 40 runs and collected 24 extra-base hits.

After redshirting the 1999 campaign following a transfer from Miami, Headley torched WCC pitching to the tune of a .445 clip in 27 league contests to also earn a second-team All-Conference selection. In addition to batting average and hits, Headley led Santa Clara in slugging percentage (.551), on-base percentage (.451) and total bases (119) while tying for the team lead with five triples and ranking second in RBI (40), doubles (15) and home runs (4). Headley also boasted a team-best 16 game hitting streak while hitting safely in 27 of his last 28 games and 48 of 55 overall.
