May 17, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior left fielder Todd Hughes was named 2000's final West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his role in Santa Clara's doubleheader sweep of No. 16 Loyola Marymount last Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Coeur d'Alene, ID native went 5-for-8 with four runs, two RBI, a double, a triple and three stolen bases to lead the Broncos to a 9-2 victory in the opener and a 9-8, 10-inning triumph in the nightcap. In game two, Hughes opened the bottom of the tenth inning with a walk and later scored the winning run.

By stealing one base in the first game and two more in the second, Hughes finished his career with a Santa Clara record 72 steals. When he swiped second in the seventh inning of the nightcap, it broke the 18-year old record held by former Bronco Dave Oliva.

Hughes finishes his Santa Clara career ranked in the school's top ten in six major offensive categories, as he is 5th with 754 career at-bats, 2nd with 181 runs, 5th with 228 hits, 1st with 20 triples, 7th with 102 walks and 1st with 72 stolen bases.
