Broncos Defeat San Jose State 4-1 in Baseball Battle of South Bay

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Santa Clara University baseball team defeated its south-bay rival San Jose State Tuesday by a score of 4-1 Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Freshman pitcher Kellan McConnell (2-1) threw seven shutout innings striking out six batters to earn his second collegiate victory. The Broncos improved their record to 15-24 on the season while San Jose State's record drops to 20-16-1.

The Broncos scored in the first inning on the Spartans' starter Chris Sherman (5-4) off a RBI single by Matt Queen scoring sophomore Jack Headley who reached on a leadoff double. Sherman was replaced in the third inning by Jahseam George who pitched two scoreless innings striking out three batters. Santa Clara scored another run in the fifth inning off Mike Malott, the third Spartan pitcher. Headley hit his second double of the night and eleventh of the season and scored off a RBI fielder's choice by Queen.

San Jose State sent its fourth pitcher, Dave Fuqua, to the mound in the seventh. He retired all three batters. Santa Clara added two more runs in the eighth inning off of Jeremy Rogelstad. Queen hit his first triple of the season and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Anderson. After Matt Miller singled, freshman Dan Vincenzi recorded his first collegiate hit, a RBI triple to right field.

Santa Clara's pitchers were the highlight of the game as McConnell shut out the Spartans through the first seven innings and senior relief pitcher Jim DeMartini struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth inning. San Jose State managed to score its only run of the game in the ninth inning off freshman Chad Fillinger.

Santa Clara was led offensively by Headley who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Queen went 2-for-4 with two RBI's. For San Jose State, Kevin Frandsen, brother of Santa Clara University basketball manager D.J. Frandsen, went 3-for-4.

Santa Clara is next in action on Friday, April 20 as they travel to Portland for a three-game WCC series. The Broncos' next home game is May 4 against the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
