Baseball Stomps St. Mary's, 10-1, To Take Second Game Of Series

MORAGA, Calif. - John Redmond limited the Saint Mary's baseball team (9-20/3-7 WCC) to four hits in seven innings of work to lead the Santa Clara Broncos (12-17/9-2) to a 10-1 victory in a West Coast Conference game on Saturday.

Redmond improved his overall record to 3-2 on the season as he allowed just four hits on the afternoon. The only run the lefty allowed came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Brett Wayne that plated Dane Dobrinich. Dobrinich had doubled earlier for Saint Mary's first hit in the game.

Santa Clara got on the scoreboard early as Matt Queen took a Kevin Trochez fastball over the left field fence for a three run homerun in the first inning. Queen finished the day 2-for-4 with five RBI, two runs scored, and a double.

Leading 3-0 heading into the top of the third inning, Santa Clara added two unearned runs in the inning to open a 5-0 lead before Saint Mary's cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning. After Trochez retired the first two hitters of the fifth inning, Jack Headley, who was 3-for-4 on the day, tripled. Queen followed with an RBI double and Pat Peavey plated Queen with an RBI single to open a 7-1 after five innings.

Trochez, who's record fell to 2-2, pitched 4.2 innings, he allowed seven runs (five earned) and six hits before giving way to Nick Wilcox in the fifth.

Santa Clara added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out homerun by Peavey. The Broncos added one more run in the top of the eighth inning to conclude the scoring.

For Saint Mary's Nick Conte finished the day 2-for-3 and Dobrinich was 1-for-3 with a double and one run scored.

For Santa Clara, Peavey finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI. Mike Theoharis was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

The two teams will conclude the three game series on Sunday, April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
